For Men whose Masculinity isn’t Toxic

Having finished yet another bracing read from Fuck Niches, I finally realized that yeah, guys suffer, too. And I imagine it’s really difficult to be the ones who are held accountable for nearly everything that’s effed for so many of us in the world. I imagine it stinks!

So, to acknowledge that not all guys are nefarious, villainous, tyrannical oppressors, I offer you your very own hashtag.

I offer you, #YouToo.

#YouToo means you’re someone who is mostly kind. It means that you understand that the havoc hormonal changes wreak are real. That our feelings, while sometimes close to the surface are genuine and human, and that you should be human, too. Do you know why you understand this? Because you get it. You do. #YouToo.

#YouToo-ers come in all kinds of packages. They’re young and they’re old, they’re tall and they’re short, they’re brown and they’re white.

In an article from a few years back, writer Ajeha Hill described #YouToo as “#YouToo is my call to action for society to actually make a difference by ending slut shaming, changing our justice system, and finally putting an end to sexual assault and violence.” But you guys already get that, you do. ’Cause, you’re #YouToo.

And you know what?

In spite of all the wretched things our forebears, former bosses, bad boyfriends, and just plain wicked men have done, we still like you. By you’re acknowledging that the unspeakable things which are finally being addressed actually happened, all of us can now get on with it. That is, the business of being alive here on the planet. In fact, we’re delighted to share this planet with you, to collaborate with you, and listen to you discuss your hopes and fears, even your feelings.

Or not. Whatever. ‘Cause you’re #YouToo. You Get It and we love you. We do.
